County/ Town Tax Information
Statement of Taxes - Tax Bills
Upon receipt of the tax roll and warrant, a statement of the taxes due (tax bill) is mailed to each property owner at the tax billing address shown on the tax roll. These tax statements are prepared from the information on the tax roll. The tax bill is sent to the requesting mortgage company if the parcel is tagged as an escrow account.
Who is Responsible?
According to New York State law, the property owner is responsible for all property taxes and penalties which may be applicable whether or not they receive a bill. (Real Property Tax Law 922)
Why didn't I receive a bill and what can I do?
If a property owner does not receive a tax bill by January 15, notify this office, and a bill will be sent out in a timely fashion. There are a couple of reasons for a bill not being received by the property owner;
a) Mailing address is incorrect on the bill.
b) The property is tagged for escrow in which case the bill has been sent to the specified mortgage company.
Receipts
If the entire bill is included with the payment, the top portion will be receipted and either mailed back or handed back to the person paying the tax bill. If the tax bill is paid by the bank or mortgage company, the receipt is mailed directly to the homeowner within 3-4 weeks upon receipt of the payment.
Second Notices
If taxes have not been paid during the 30 days following the period when the taxes could have been paid without interest or penalty, then a second notice of delinquent taxes is sent to the mailing address of the owner. At this time an additional fee is imposed to cover the expense of the second notice. (This applies only to Town and County taxes. School taxes must have the full amount due paid.)
What happens if I don't pay my bill?
Tax payments are received in this office until the last date so noted on the tax bill. After that date all delinquent tax bills are sent to the Oswego County Treasurer's Office for collection at 46 East Bridge Street, Oswego NY 13126. Telephone: (315) 349-8393 or 1-800-349-8392 for more information on paying the tax bill and for additional fees and penalties.
School Tax Information
This office collects school taxes for the Town of Schroeppel only. Office hours are Monday - Thursday 9 am - 4pm daily during the school tax collection period of September through October. The office is open during the lunch hour.
What is the tax collection schedule for the Phoenix School District?
School tax bills are sent to property owners upon receipt of the school tax warrent by the Receiver of Taxes. School taxes are collected from September 1 through October 31. Taxes paid after September 30 will incur a penalty. No taxes will be accepted in the Tax Receiver's office after October 31. Taxes to be paid after that date will be paid to the Oswego County Treasurer's Office, 46 East Bridge Street, Oswego NY 13126. Persons may call the Treasurer's Office at (315) 349-8393 or 1-800-349-8392 for more information on paying the tax bill and for additional fees and/or penalties.
The school tax bill may not be paid by installment. The complete bill must be paid at the time of remittance by the property owner.
All procedures are the same for the collection of taxes whether for the School or for Real Property taxes. Receipts are issued if the full bill is submitted with the payment or to the owner if the parcel is paid by a mortgage company. Receipts are also available on-line at www.taxlookup.net.
Payments by mail
Payments are accepted as timely if the payment was postmarked by the United States Post Office on the last day that the payment is due. A postage meter postmark is not a postmark made by the United States Post Office, and therefore, is not within the provisions of Real Property Tax Law 925.
Cash or Check?
Tax bills can be paid either by cash or check. Payments are accepted at the window during normal business hours, by mail, or through the use of a secure and locked drop box located at the entrance and labeled for the Tax Receiver.
